Batalla del Vino- Wine Battle of La Rioja, Spain

Here is a taste of what it is like to be at the Batalla del Vino in Haro, Spain.

Every year, the city of Haro celebrates the end of their week of festivals with the Batalla del Vino, the Battle of the wine in San Felices, a mountain top about 7 kilometers from Haro.

Everyone starts the party the night before and the next day hikes up to San Felices to arrive at the 8 am start time of the battle. The rule is to wear white, all white if possible, if not, a white shirt. Everyone battles each other with wine until noon and then heads back into town to run circles around the town square. But at about 11 am, everyone enjoys a traditional Almuerzo or mid-day snack of Caracoles- Snails and Lomo con pimientos- Pork with red peppers! All amazing food and wine!

Enjoy! Perhaps the next June 29th, you can join us in Haro, Spain for this fun and very messy event.

Come experience the Riojan Young and Fresh…Wines! Rioja Joven y Fresco Event Recap

Every year Lo Mejor del Vino de Rioja holds an event to allow wineries in La Rioja to present their newest released wines. This includes the 2012 release of white, rose and young red wines. What is great about this event is that it gets the younger generation out and trying the young wines of La Rioja, who normally drink “cubatas” or mixed drinks instead of wine.

This is a great event for wine lovers and new wine lovers as it allows you to try five wines and compare them.

Pedro Balda, winemaker of La Rad- Pedro Balda-Viticultor, and Julio Carreter, winemaker of the Torres Winery- Rioja- Ibericos join me today to help explain the event.

If you happen to be in La Rioja over the summer, it is worth checking out http://www.lomejordelvinoderioja.com/ for upcoming wine events. Salud!!

Our fun day trip to Hondarribia, ES and Hendaye, FR – June 2011

When you aren’t sure what to do and looking for something within 2 hours of Logroño, the País Vasco is where you want to go for sun, sand and surf…and lots of great tapas.

Here is what my girls called our version of Sex in the City, since it was just us girls wandering around and enjoying the amazing Txakoli wine of the region, tapas and beaches; we called this trip “Sex in Hondarribia” as a joke!

We also happened upon a wonderful medieval festival in the center of town. If you are in the area, stop by and enjoy this beautiful city with so much to see and do.

Enjoy!
